Introduction and Literature Review
Cachexia
Cachexia and Cancer
- Condition that causes weakness and wasting of the body due to severe chronic illness
- Unproportioned quantity of specific substances
- Unintentional weight loss
- Diminishes adipose tissue
- Leads to changes in muscle protein metabolism
Cachexia and Cancer
- Weakens body which influences the ability to fight terminal illness
- Shortens life expectancy
- Creates an increasingly difficult battle against illness
- Reduces quality of life
Protein Degradation
- Myosin Heavy Chain (MHC) is the motor protein of muscle thick filaments
- Majority of organisms create multiple MHC muscles
- Interleukin individually incorporate classes of glycoproteins created by leukocytes-> normalize immune responses
- Interleukin-6 (IL-6) functions as pro-inflammatory cytokine and anti-inflammatory myokine
- Hidden by T cells and macrophages -> evoke immune response
- Type I and Type II muscle fibers. -> two ways fibers breakdown
- Type I -> slow twitch oxidative fibers. - lower difficulty and strain exercise, high tolerance to weakness
- Type II -> fast twitch, typically larger - high intensity, strengthen and grows muscle
